The pros: how often should I apply intensive oil treatments?

Should oil treatments be an essential part of your haircare routine? How should you use them? And which oils are best? Our pro reveals all.

Intensive oil treatments are ideal for deeply nourishing your hair. ‘These types of treatments are especially suited to damaged hair (that has been subjected to heated appliances or colored frequently), dry hair and frizzy hair. Intensive oils will help your hair get back to its former glory. Once applied, the hair shaft swells and absorbs the oil, meaning more shine, more volume and a softer texture’.

Intensive oil treatments are simple to perform at home. ‘Be careful not to over-saturate the hair… a small amount is all that’s needed. Apply carefully to your mid-lengths and ends. Allow to rest for as long as possible. Ideally, allow to act on your hair all night long underneath a scarf, then shampoo come morning to eliminate any surplus. This routine should be performed once every two weeks, or once a week for very damaged hair.

Our advice: Be sure to look at the ingredients list before purchasing your oil. It should preferably be 100% natural and silicone-free. When it comes to choosing the right type of oil (keratin, avocado, olive, jojoba, cocoa, argan), opt for whichever suits your hair type best. You can also combine a couple to tailor-make your own formula.
