The pros give their verdict on the pin-up hairstyle

This style takes direct inspiration from the 30s and 40s era. The look can be worn similar to Betty Boop’s signature hair, which was considered modern at the time, with a wet-look effect, or as pictured with dry hair. The pros give their advice on how to create this vintage hairstyle.

Here, the front of the hairstyle has been created with flat curls. ‘To recreate this effect at home, take a damp piece of hair, apply mousse, then mould your curl and secure with bobby pins. To form your curl, gently twist into your desired shape with your fingertips. Repeat this process around the front of the head for a similar result’.

You can also copy this effect by using curling tongs. ‘With this technique, make sure you work with dry hair. Once you’ve heated your curl, apply hairspray immediately to ensure a long-lasting hold. This version is slightly more difficult, however, if you want to try out flat curls. We recommend simply using your fingers’.

At the time, women’s hairstyles would have been curled using the same method. However, there is a cheat way to replicate the look. ‘The model pictured has skipped curling all of her lengths and focused on creating waves nearer the front. The rest of her hair is tied back into a chignon’.

Want to create the same retro effect with another hairstyle? ‘Why not give it a go with loose lengths, or a side-swept version? Then style your curls at the front and maximise volume’.

Our advice: Remember that it’s better to have slightly thicker hair in order to perfectly create this effect. This style looks glamorous thanks to the action going on behind your curls at the rear, so avoid this one if your hair is fine.
