The pros give their verdict on the beret

The beret is a retro accessory which can be worn with several different hairstyles. Here, a simple side braid has been styled with this hat. So, should you be copying this look, or leaving it in the closet? The pros reveal all.

The beret can be worn with both short and long hair. ‘You should avoid wearing the beret with loose lengths. If your hair is naturally quite fine, wearing a beret on top will only emphasize this further. Whereas, if your hair is thick, it will instantly show up the beret line when removed. This is why it’s so important not to wear your beret over loose locks’.

If you work this trend the correct way, make sure you style your cap or beret to the side. ‘The model pictured has made the mistake of wearing her beret too symmetrically’.

The beret shouldn’t need your hair to stand out, and should perfectly compliment your overall outfit. ‘This accessory gives your look that extra edge, but you don’t need to wear a specific hairstyle with the beret to get this trend right. Simply keep in mind that you should choose a style that won’t highlight where your beret has been resting. A smooth, tied-back look is perfect, whether you select a chignon or a classic ponytail’.

Our advice: When selecting your beret, opt for a size larger than your usual hat size so that you don’t get the dreaded indentations on your hair afterwards. After choosing your beret, you can then decide how to style your locks.
