The pros discuss the wide-brim fedora hat

A wide-brim fedora hat is the perfect accessory for summer. Your scalp is protected from the sun whilst you sunbathe by the sea. However, which haircare products should you be using whilst wearing a hat? And, more importantly, how should you style your locks whilst wearing this summer’s must-have? The pros reveal all.

A hat isn’t enough to protect your hair whilst on holiday. ‘A wide-brim fedora hat will protect from the sun, but not all the other elements. If you’re heading to a coastal location this summer, hair can become damaged due to the change in climate and even saltwater. Hair needs an ultra-protective formula, such as Sun Therapy. The heat generated around your scalp whilst wearing a fedora can also cause damage to your locks, meaning hair can overheat’.

The style you decide to create whilst wearing a hat all depends on your hair. ‘If your hair is naturally voluminous, it can be quite difficult to fit a hat over your style. You could be left with the dreaded helmet-look once you take your hat off or suffer from flat, lifeless hair. If your hair is naturally straight, wearing a hat is fairly straight forward’.

Make sure to apply the correct haircare product in advance if you know you will be wearing a hat. ‘Opt for a styling product or hairspray which will instantly pep-up your roots and the rest of your look. Although you can get away with wearing a hat for around 30 minutes, 4 hours is a completely different story!’

Our advice: For the summer season, a straw hat is the perfect accessory as it is much more lightweight and breathable than the felt version pictured. Style your hair into a side plait or head to your Jean Louis David salon. Ask your stylist for one of the side braids available at the new Style Bar Speed Up-Do service.
