Teaching children to detangle their hair

Every day is the same old story: does your little one run away whenever they catch a glimpse of a comb? To prevent tantrums, it’s best to teach them how to gently comb their hair. Here are a few tips on making hair detangling child’s play.

To start with, it’s preferable never to detangle your child’s hair dry, at the risk of it not only being painful for your little one, but also breaking their beautiful curls. The best moment to tackle it? After washing their locks with a mild shampoo.

Choosing the right products…

Just like your own hair, your little cherub’s locks require targeted detangling products. You can use a hydrating conditioner, specifically for children, which you leave to soak in for a few minutes before briefly detangling their hair with your fingers. Ask your child to help make the situation less stressful. Then, get your hands on a paddle brush, which makes detangling easier, and run it through their hair. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Once again, talk through what you are doing and repeat the movements slowly so they grasp the importance of this haircare regime. Finally, to get rid of any knots that have formed overnight, apply a leave-in detangling treatment, chosen according to the nature of your child’s hair.

Be inventive

As soon as your child starts mastering the detangling technique, you can turn it into a game: for example, separate their hair into 2 sections. Then, whoever detangles their section first wins. Feel free to quickly go over the sections to be sure there are no knots left in their hair.
