Put an end to split ends

As your hair grows, split ends start to appear. Not the sexiest of looks… To avoid the worst and prevent them from forming, follow this advice from the professionals. Quick!

Split ends are caused by a lack of keratin in the hair. There are several reasons for this. “First of all, the use of heated styling tools such as straighteners, or a hair dryer too close to your hair, without first applying a heat protector product.” Split ends can also be caused by your hair rubbing against your pillow when you’re sleeping or, if you have long hair, rubbing on clothes. When this happens, your hair gets dehydrated and the ends split into two.

The quickest and most effective way of getting rid of split ends obviously involves your hairdresser’s scissors! “Once split ends have started to appear, there’s not a great deal you can do other than cut off the damaged ends. This stops the split ends from going further up your hair.” So don’t wait until the last minute to go and see your hairdresser. The longer you leave it the more you will have to have cut off. “Check your ends regularly. Act when you see that they have started to split into two, like a branch.” Remember that fine, long hair is more susceptible to split ends than other hair types.

So it’s important you get your hair cut often and look after it every day to delay their arrival. “Use the right products for your hair type and pay lots of attention to the mid-lengths and ends. Especially if you have long hair! Keep your hair nice and hydrated to ensure it doesn’t weaken.” Remember that if you tend to have greasy hair, this doesn’t mean your ends won’t be dry; the sebum is not distributed across your hair from the roots to the ends. Don’t neglect them!

Our tip: If you use heated styling tools such as straighteners and a hair dryer, make sure you always use a heat protector spray! This will protect your hair from the heat and stop your ends drying out.
