Product and technique: Are you washing your hair the right way?

Are you sure you are using the right shampoo and applying it correctly? Take a look at our following tips on effective haircare regimes.

Shampooing is an essential step for keeping your locks looking good. It rids your hair of residue built up over time (pollution, dead skin cells and styling product build-up) and stimulates the scalp.

Opt for a shampoo that meets your needs

The secret to washing your hair properly is choosing a shampoo that meets all of your hair’s needs.

If you have greasy roots, opt for purifying and oil control shampoos.

If your locks are dry and brittle, go for a hydrating shampoo which strengthens the hair fibre. Your hair will look better after each wash.

If your hair is limp and lifeless, opt for a volumizing shampoo.

If you have coloured your hair, go for a shampoo with a targeted formula to hold onto your hair’s colour.

Ideally, you should regularly switch between two different shampoos to address all of your hair’s issues.

Adopt an optimum washing frequency…

Avoid washing your hair every day. You might strip the hair fibre of its natural protective film, making it more vulnerable to external damaging factors. Not to mention that if you have greasy roots, washing your locks too often will stimulate the gland which secretes sebum, making it produce excessive amounts. Ideally, you should let time go by between hairwashes so that you wash your hair twice a week, 3 times a week at the most, with mild frequent use shampoos. Between hairwashes, consider using dry shampoo to freshen up your locks.

…and correct application

After having detangled your locks, completely wet them. For the first application, you should just apply shampoo to your roots. A small amount is enough: it is better to use a product sparingly than go overboard. Massage your scalp using your fingertips in circular movements to promote blood circulation. Leave it to work for a few seconds, then rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. To properly clean your locks, rinse and repeat. Lather it up, spread out the foam down the lengths of your hair and rinse it with plenty of water.

Finish off with a treatment

Next use conditioner, which softens the hair fibre and makes detangling easier. Put it onto your locks little by little so that you do not use too much, as it might weigh your hair down. Then rinse thoroughly.
If you have damage-prone locks, opt for a nourishing hair mask which will deeply repair the hair fibre. The one you should choose depends on how fragile your locks are, and also how thick. Spread out a large amount of the treatment strand by strand, from the mid-lengths down to the tips, particularly focusing on the ends. Avoid the roots, unless you are treating excess sebum with a green clay mask. Leave the mask to work for the amount of time indicated on the packaging before rinsing thoroughly. If your locks are crying out for some TLC, use a hair mask after every wash. Otherwise, once a week is enough.
Finish off by rinsing your locks in cold water to bring out your hair’s shine.
