Pompoms: an alternative to hair ties?

Want to discover the latest hair accessory being worn by fashionistas everywhere this season? It’s the pompom. No, we’re not joking. This colorful accessory is being snapped up left, right and center. Let’s take a closer look.

If you can’t think of a new way to style your locks, simply change your accessories. Say goodbye to your regular hair ties and hello to statement hair pieces. This season’s catwalks have been awash with flamboyant hair accessories from headbands to turbans, 90s scrunchies, metallic cuffs and crowns. The next version to join this hairstyle revolution is the pompom.

Wool: still going strong. Wool is truly having a moment this season. This summer we spotted dreadlocks on the Chanel catwalk and at some of the industry’s top fashion shoots (Dazed and Confused and their ‘hair tapestry’ shoot). Next came the hippy-chic inspired quilted braid which was sent down the Xiao Li runway. This season’s mantra is ‘wool is the new hair’.

Why wear the pompom? This versatile look kills two birds with one stone. This trend is perfect for lovers of wool and weaves, whilst also nailing the ethnic trend, inspired by Native American cultures and prints. These small balls of wool are ideal for completing your hippy-chic look and creating a more authentic feel to any bohemian style.

Get the runway look. Opt for a simple hairstyle such as a chignon or ponytail when using your pompom accessory for the first time. Besides, styling a complicated braid with pompoms can look overdone, unless you’re going for an arty hipster vibe. Similarly, a fairly plain and simple outfit in dark tones will make the color of your pompoms pop beautifully. If you select a colorful assortment of pompoms, be sure not to clash your hair accessory with your make-up and keep things simple.
