Messy roots spotted on the 3.1 Philip Lim catwalk

Be daring this winter and create a rebel-chic look with messy, body-boosted roots. We take a closer look at the original hairstyles spotted on the 3.1 Philip Lim Autumn-Winter 2014-2015 runway show at New York Fashion Week.

The trend. A hairstyle with pumped-up roots, worn in an updo or loose. This messy style will add a rough and ready effect to your look, similar to the untidy styles spotted on the runway models. Whether your locks are platinum blonde, jet black or a rich chocolate hue…hair colors were worn in block shades. Models were dressed in chic, yet casual, outfits made out of soft, flowing fabrics. Lines were clean and geometric. Make-up artists gave Lim’s models’ a nude overhaul with a simple, uniform complexion.

Who can wear messy roots? This hairstyle is ideal for adding a rock-n-roll vibe to your look, whatever you’re wearing. Its unstructured feel has plenty of character and can be worn day and night. Simply balance your look with a more refined outfit to avoid a fashion faux-pas.

Get the runway look. Gather your locks at the rear of your head using a hairbrush. Saturate with Texture Powder to provide more body and texture. Next, concentrating on the front of your style, backcomb the roots to add volume. Make sure your technique is right: comb in the opposite direction to which your hair grows. Apply a small amount of gel throughout the roots to create shine and the appearance of lightly dampened hair. Finally, keep everything in place with an even layer of hairspray for a long lasting hold. It’s now up to you to decide between a ponytail, chignon or loose lengths!
