How to style your hair when wearing a hat

Hats are a great way to structure your haircut and protect your hair from the summer sun. Here are some important steps to styling your hair with a hat.

You don’t always have to wear your hair down with a hat. “If your hat is quite tall, style your hair inside it to protect it from the sun. Down or up, it’s up to you. It all depends on what you want to do with your accessory.

Summer 2013 is all about keeping things natural. “Why not opt for a straw hat? Straw hats are all the rage this year. Not only is it a must-have hair accessory, it also gives you an irresistible preppy and vintage style.” Make the most of the summer season and borrow your man’s hats. “Men tend to be huge fans of the straw hat and the cap, why not you? These are two of the season’s hottest accessories.”

While short hair looks great with any hat, this isn’t the case for long hair. “People with long hair should stick to accessories such as fascinators to avoid a lack of volume. If you wearing a hat to cover up your hair because you haven’t had time to wash it, go for a hat with a bit of volume, but remember you’ll have to keep it on all day!”

Whichever hairstyle you go for, don’t apply any products before putting on your hat. “Hats and styling products don’t go well together. Your hair can end up shaping itself to the shape of your hat and ‘creasing’. Stay away from oils as well. Though they can be used to create a trendy wet look, when combined with a hat they will only leave your hair looking greasy.
