How to keep black hair in top condition

Deciding to go dark requires a lot of work and upkeep, both before and after coloring your hair. Even blondes can go black and keep their color vibrant when using the correct haircare products. The pros give their advice on how to keep jet black hair looking shiny and radiant for as long as possible.

How much time you will need to spend looking after your hair all depends on your natural hair color. ‘If your hair is light blonde to medium brown, you will need to give your color more care and attention, as you will be more prone to the color fading. If dyeing your hair black only changes your natural color by a couple of shades, you will not need to spend as much time or money on maintaining your look’.

Going dark takes both time and preparation if your hair is a natural blonde shade. ‘You can’t go from blonde to black in 15 minutes, and certainly not using a home colourant. Your hair will need to be treated first with a pre-coloring formula before moving on to the next complicated steps of the process’.

If you do decide that this look is for you and want to book an appointment, bear in mind that when your hair is dyed black you will not be able to create any highlights within your style. ‘Golden or coppery highlights will not show through, whereas blue, red and purple tones will become much more visible. Only strong, deep colors will shine throughout your hair’.

Our advice: You will need to realise that regular salon appointments are an absolute must when it comes to looking after your new hair color. Your Jean Louis David stylist will be able to give you the Colour Therapy treatment which will restore your hair’s shine and revive fading color thanks to added color pigments. At home, opt for the Colour Therapy range when it comes to washing and conditioning your locks.
