Hairstyle head-to-head: the curly side fringe VS the strict side fringe

This season, side fringes are more ingenious than ever before. Side fringes are sometimes tousled, sometimes bohemian. But for autumn-winter 2013-2014, they’re either curly or strict. Having trouble choosing between the two? We take them head-to-head to help you decide.

The curly side fringe. Inspired by hairstyles from the 1940s with a retro feel. Whichever hairstyle you choose to go with it, the curly side fringe adds a touch of elegance and refinement to your style. Very Hollywood. The style is perfect for special occasions, that’s why actresses are sporting it on red carpets all over the world. To create it, all you need are curling tongs or Velcro rollers to give your fringe the right shape. Finish with a layer of hairspray for the perfect hold.

The strict side fringe. Easy to recreate on a daily basis, the strict side fringe is a slick side fringe. It reveals the face without sacrificing femininity. To accentuate the strict side fringe, part your hair on the side of your choice. Make sure it is perfectly neat. This hairstyle is only successful when it has an almost stern feel. To compensate the rigid effect of the front of the style, work the back of the hair into a looser, lighter style. A dishevelled braid or ponytail will do just the trick.

Our verdict. Either style is perfect when you’re after something stylish! However, a curly side fringe is better suited to a more elaborate hairstyle, perfect for a night out. The strict side fringe however works best during the day. Wear both in one day, simply pop home after work before going out for dinner: heat up your curling tongs, give your fringe a 40s feel and you’re ready to go. One hairstyle, two possibilities!
