Going from blond to light brown: expert advice

Going from blond to light brown is a simple process as long as you seek professional help. Colouring techniques, top tips and upkeep… Vanessa Giani, in charge of training at Jean Louis David, answers our questions.

What is the best technique to go from blond to light brown?

The ideal technique is to get your hair coloured in the salon with a precise assessment and a personalised treatment. At Jean Louis David, we use a Gloss treatment as an intermediary step to prepare the hair. This is an exclusive technique used to revive colour . This service allows the hair fibre to hold colour pigments more easily. Then, the colourist will apply your chosen colour, using the right amount of product depending on your desired look and the condition of your locks.

What is the difference between salon and home hair colouring?

A woman who is in a hurry to change hair colour is taking a risk by dyeing it herself. The problem is that the result depends on the initial shade of blond, how the hair reacts and its condition. When you are making a drastic change, from very light blond to light brown for example, the product applied could ‘slide off’, which means the colour does not penetrate well . As a result, the hair looks washed out, dull or could turn green, which is very difficult to rectify . When colouring your hair, the product may bring out the warm tones in certain strands to such an extent that you get orange locks.

How can I get a natural-looking result?

For a hair colouring which looks as natural as possible, the colourist will create different shades depending on the section of hair, for example, the sides or the back of the head. This technique allows you to get a more blended finish which catches the light better. To come back to your previous question, this would be impossible to do at home.

How can I keep my colour looking good?

Plan to go back to see your hairdresser a month after you have coloured your hair to give it some shine with the Gloss treatment, for example. After two to three applications, the hair will have enough pigments for a radiant shade of light brown and you can therefore space out how often you go to the hairdresser depending on the regrowth at your roots. Alongside this, opt for a range of products specifically designed to moisturise and revive coloured locks .
