Create a ballerina-esque chignon

The ballerina-esque chignon never really goes out of style and was even spotted on some of 2014-2015 runway shows. This sophisticated up-do opens up the wearer’s face and streamlines facial features. This season’s take on the classic ballerina bun, however, is less severe and creates a much more casual effect.

The trend. Often spotted being worn by young school girls or, alternatively, high-flying business women, the ballerina chignon is getting a new look this season. Instead of the tight and severe effect traditionally created with the chignon, this season’s take on the up-do is more relaxed and therefore more practical for women to wear day-to-day. The chignon is still placed high on top of the head, yet is styled with a few flyaway pieces for a de-structured look.

Who can wear the ballerina chignon? Women with mid-length to long hair that is fairly smooth and free of kinks. Ideally, straight locks are your best bet for nailing the runway look. Curly hair can be tricky to style into a top-knot and can often appear messy. The ballerina-esque chignon is perfect for sophisticated women who like keeping their hair away from their face during the day.

Get the runway look. You don’t need freshly-washed hair to create this up-do. You can even use dry shampoo to add texture and hold, making your chignon easier to style.  Sweep your hair backwards and up onto the top of your head with a brush. Your chignon shouldn’t have a visible parting. Secure your high ponytail with hair tie. You can now start creating your casual ballerina look. Wrap your lengths around the hair tie and swirl into a classic chignon shape. Secure again, then gently tease small strands out of your bun to give the impression your style took seconds to create. Finally, spray hairspray to add long-lasting hold.
