Choosing the right styling product

Today you have the choice of an array of styling products to create, style and fix your hair. Styling mousse, spray, gel, wax or sculpting paste, you’re spoilt for choice. You just need to know which ones suit your hair type and will help you create the hairstyle you’re after. Explanations.

Hairstyles are a chance to get creative with your hair. “This means transforming it, adding volume, shaping it this or that way or giving it a different texture. Your imagination is the only limitation!” However, you do need to take your length and hair type into account in order to put these styling products to good use.

First of all, styling spray. This is great for working on dry hair and adding shape. It can also be used to add volume to fine hair, which will not take to gels. “Sprays are also good if you often use straighteners or curling tongs, as most sprays protect your hair from the heat.”

Styling mousse is a multi-functional product! “Apply to wet hair then dry your hair using straighteners or a hair dryer, depending on the result you’re after. Styling mousse adds shine to dull hair, adds volume to fine hair and can be used to add definition to curls.”

Hair gel styles and fixes hair at the same time. Use your fingers to work it into your hair and create your style and get the volume you want. “Gel can be used to add structure to your hair but the finished look depends on the strength of hold you choose. You can choose to leave your hair flexible or go for a stronger hold for a more crisp effect.”

Finally, wax and sculpting paste are more about shine and flexibility. “They can be used to add texture to your hair or create the shape you want but they do not provide any hold.” For best results use on dry hair and feel free to add in a small amount of gel to get the hold you need. You can also find wax gels if you want to add structure and shine to your hair at the same time.

Our tip: Careful not to use too much of these products to avoid suffocating your scalp or having to wash your hair every day. Place the product in your hands first and use your fingers to apply the right amount.
