Advice from the pros: shaven sides

Most commonly associated with men’s hairstyles, shaven sides have now become a popular look amongst women also. The proof is our model (pictured). But what do the pros think of this quirky style and who can wear it? Let’s find out.

Shaven sides are a real opinion divider. ‘In fact, this look cements your style status whilst making you stand out from the crowd. What’s more, you need to be prepared to wear this style for months to come, as the growing out period is fairly lengthy. Think long and hard before going for the shave’.

Here, the lower half of the models’ hair has been shaven around the sides and rear. ‘However, not everybody needs to create this exact look. You could try just one side shaven, or just the rear of your style. It’s totally up to you to decide what works best for you’.

This look is great paired with almost any hair color. ‘Of course, shaven sides often suit brunettes better than blondes. However, this shouldn’t stop women with lighter hair giving this style a go’.

If you are tempted to go for shaven sides, make sure that you keep the upper section fairly long. ‘This is the only way you will be able to hide the under layers when you eventually decide to grow out your hairstyle. When transitioning from shaven sides to longer lengths, you’ll need to hide the under sections with the longer hair from above, or go for an all-over short do for a uniform finish’.

Our advice: Before you decide to shave your sides, make sure you seek the advice of a professional stylist. They will be able to advise you on the cut and color for optimum results.
