3 braids for summer 2013

When summer arrives, you can’t beat braided hairstyles, and there are so many to choose from. Follow our guide to find out which braids to wear this summer.

The mini African braid. Seen on the Hervé Léger catwalk, the mini African braid is subtle and can be used to structure your hairstyles. This version of the braid looks great on both short and long haircuts.  Hair is worn straight and in a side parting, while the braid is created on the opposite side of the parting. Like with a French braid, this one starts at the temple, following your hairline down to your ear.

The braided headband. To create the braided headband using your own hair, you’ll need a certain amount of length. Create a horizontal parting above your forehead, holding the front section and pulling the rest of your hair back. Take the front section and braid it from the far side of your hair just next to your ear, past your forehead to your other ear. Secure at the back of your neck then style the rest of your hair. It’s up to you whether you want to wear it loose or tie it into a chignon or a ponytail.

The rope braid. This involves just two strands, which are twisted round on themselves. Start at the top of your head like a French braid, twist each section then cross one over the other. Work your way down your head to meet the rest of your hair at the nape of your neck. Next, twist the lengths. To maximise the volume of your braid, apply a styling mousse when your hair is wet for added oomph.
