Why is my hair falling out?

Wondering why you seem to be losing so much hair? Is this normal? How can you stop your hair from falling out? Our pro reveals all…

It’s completely normal for your hair to fall out. “Don’t panic if you’ve started to notice some hair falling out. A hair goes through several different stages in its life: the hair is grown from within the scalp, it then comes through the scalp and finally grows until it eventually falls out. Hair is also frequently replaced. A new hair will replace any older hairs that have dropped out. You can lose up to 100 hairs per day!’

If you think you’re losing more than this amount, there are several different explanations. ‘There are many reasons which cause this phenomenon. Some women have more testosterone than others which causes hair to fall out more regularly. Or, you could have a medical-related condition: both high stress levels and extreme fatigue could be potential causes, as well as bad cholesterol or medication you may be taking. Finally, there are certain periods in a woman’s life where hair loss is more common, such as post-pregnancy’.

Our advice: Over use of heating styling tools and stress on the scalp can further aggravate this problem. Before straightening your locks, apply a heat-protective serum. You should also use specifically adapted haircare products to match your hair concerns. In terms of diet, try taking a supplement or vitamins to strengthen your hair from the inside. If your hair loss does not slow down over a few weeks, make an appointment with your doctor for further advice.
