Which hairstyles for under your hat this winter?

The winter weather is finally here, meaning headwear is a must-have to keep your head and ears toasty this season. However, wearing a hat can make it difficult to decide which hairstyle to wear, due to practicality. Here are a few ideas to get you started…

Bed-head hair. This is, by far, your simplest option. The trend will take you from ‘bad hair day’ to a stylish bed-head look in minutes. Get some style inspiration from Cara Delevingne, the reigning queen of messy locks. Spray some dry shampoo onto your lengths then roughen up with your fingertips, allowing your hat to hide your roots. Nail Cara’s relaxed runway look with a statement slogan bobble hat.

The straight fringe. When worn long, the straight fringe can look great paired with a hat, despite the inevitable flattening. Regardless of how you decide to style your lengths, from straight to wavy or curly, this version of the fringe will give you an impish allure and frame your features beautifully. Opt for a pompom style hat to accentuate the playfulness of your overall look.

The side braid. One of the best hairstyles to pair with a hat has to be the side braid. Wear any way you like, be it tightly braided, loose, messy, French-style, Heidi-esque, in dual fishtail braids or even with four strands. The side braid is ideal for wearing underneath a hat this season, as your style can still be spotted. Avoid obscure braids, however, unless you want to end up looking like Pippi Longstocking!

Retro curls. Similar to the fringe, you may have previously thought that curls weren’t suited to hats, as they can become flattened and look lifeless. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Wearing a hat on top of some retro pin-up curls, whether long or short, is the perfect way to boost volume and add a chic touch to your outfit. We recommend selecting a hat which covers the whole of your head, but one which won’t overshadow your style. Want to go one step further? Complete your retro feel by adding a statement flower accessory on one side.

Pigtails. Youthful-looking styles never go out of fashion and are ideal for wearing under your hat this winter. Complete your preppy look with some cute pigtails. Alternate between tightly braided plaits, looser braids or simply braid the upper section and leave the lengths loose. A winter hat will show off your creative handiwork for all to see.
